We will be the only group at this hidden gem of a B&B on the tree lined streets of a safe, tranquil, residential suburb of Dunkeld, a short 30 minute drive from OR Tambo Airport on arrival in South Africa and ideally located for the tours we’ll do here on our short stay. Surrounded by artfully planted gardens, the 58 On Hume team pride themselves on unobtrusive service excellence, thoughtful details in each room, delicious cooked breakfasts or simply continental if that’s all just too filling, making use of fresh local ingredients.
Chobe Safari Lodge, Botswana
Established in 1959, Chobe Safari Lodge is remotely located on the banks of the Chobe River, surrounded by an intricate waterway supporting a pristine habitat teeming with birdlife and wildlife, including lion, cheetah, buffalo, and the highest concentration of elephants in the world and shares a border with Chobe National Park. Our luxury safari rooms enjoy expansive lawns which form the banks of the Chobe River, each individually decorated to embrace Botswana’s rich wilderness, and offering patios to give privacy whilst enjoying undisturbed viewing of the river from your own room. It’s my favourite lodge in Botswana – the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and go out of their way to give the best experiences every single time!
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
On a plateau overlooking the Zambezi National Park, the 72-room sunset-facing Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is located just 4km from the majestic Victoria Falls, and offers a unique wildlife experience. They are renowned for their views over a wildlife-rich waterhole, visited by herds of elephant, buffalo and kudu. This lodge has been voted the country’s Best Safari Lodge/Resort Hotel for 25 years by the Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents – and are my favourite because it’s serviced by the warm, friendly people of my homecountry! Built of thatch and timber, the lodge rises several levels, giving the impression of a vast open-plan tree house, with the central area featuring the award-winning MaKuwa-Kuwa Restaurant, the famous Buffalo Bar, a two-tiered swimming pool and a fitness centre. We are just 4km from the majestic Victoria Falls, the rain forest, and a thriving local market brimming with incredible handcrafted art and décor where I always stop to ‘shop local’ for me and for exceptionally unique gifts!

We’ll enjoy breakfasts at the popular fisherman’s Heritage restaurant next to the lovely garden and refreshing pool, and it is just a four minute walk to the historic Hermanus Village Centre with craft markets, Whale House Museum and the Old Harbour Museum.
